Good alternative to plastic food storage   March 16, 2007

I have recently discarded all my Tupper Ware and similar plastic storage containers and switched to Pyrex. The containers I bought are very good, the lids are maybe a bit tight to put on and the one complaint I have is that they are smaller than I expected. It probably is a good idea to pay attention to the size before ordering. There are many available choices.

Because the news media warned against using plastic to heat food in the microwave, I have purchased two different sets of Pyrex and am very happy with one of the sets, but this one is not as convenient because of the lids and the sizes of the bowls. I didn’t think I was going to get the lid off the smallest of the bowls after storing food in it. I don’t feel I can use the lids with the vent mechanism because of not using plastic in the microwave so that pretty much negates the use of the lids for that purpose. Also the size of the bowls is not that useful, either. I have yet to use the divided dish because of its size and because the bowls are more shallow than tall it is more difficult to get a grip on them with potholders when removing them from the microwave. The set is okay but I definitely would not buy it again.

I just received my set. I’m not sure how useful the divided dish will be as it’s shallower than I expected. Still it makes for a nice meal container where you could separate meats and veggies. The bowls are wide (rather than deep) with a lip for the lids. I struggled to get the lids on at first. After leaving them on for a couple days, the lids seemed to have stretched a little making them easier to put on. I love how three bowls can be stored inside each other to save space.
